Jay Carney On Birth Certificate ‘Distraction’: Most Americans Are ‘Appalled’

White House press secretary Jay Carney is getting a bit more forceful as of late, today taking on the topic of where President Obama was born. Carney responded to a question about Donald Trump‘s consistent inquiry into Obama’s birth certificate and declared “the president was born in the United States of America” before suggesting that such a “settled issue” should not be receiving serious attention.

Instead, Carney wants the focus of everyone’s attention to shift to important topics like the economy, unemployment and the deficit. Carney elaborated:

“I just think this is, it’s a distraction. And it’s an unfortunate distraction. . . . Most Americans would be appalled that this is what concerns us here when . . . there are so many major issues that are facing this country.”

Carney even said “the birth certificate that the campaign put up online has been available for everyone to see online around the globe.” However, despite Carney’s best efforts to shift focus off of the issue, as long as Trump keeps dangling little new allegations piece by piece, it may be difficult for Americans to avoid the “distraction” no matter how “appalled” they might be.
