Jeff Sessions on Mail Bomb Suspect: He ‘Appears to Be a Partisan’

During a Department of Justice press conference on the same day as the arrest of Cesar Sayac, the Florida man suspected to be at the center of the mail bombings, Attorney General Jeff Sessions acknowledged that the attempted bombings appeared to be the work of “a partisan.”

Sessions’s remarks came during the question and answer portion of the news conference.

A reporter asked, “Could you tell us plainly why was he targeting Democrats?”

Sessions replied,  “I don’t know. Other than what you might normally expect. He may have been — it appears to be partisan but that will be determined by the facts as the case goes forward. I’m not able to comment on that.”

A second reporter then asked FBI Director Christopher Wray, “What role you think the rhetoric in the political arena might have played in this?”

Wray said that at the FBI, “We’re focused not on the talk but on the work.”

Then, as a followup, the reporter pressed, “Are you concerned that nasty political rhetoric might motivate someone who is predisposed to violence to act out?”

“We’re concerned about people committing acts of violence under any motivation,” Wray replied, refusing to bite.
