Joe Scarborough Defends Republicans Abandoning MAGA ‘Personality Cult’ To Back Harris: ‘Trump Is NOT A Conservative’
Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough slammed MAGA Republicans for their loyalty to former President Donald Trump, who he said had “no ideology,” as he defended former GOP congresswoman Liz Cheney against criticism for her public endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris for president.
Cheney made the revelation on Wednesday from the stage during an event at Duke University, remarking that Donald Trump posed a “danger” to the constitution, which she deeply cares about “as a conservative”, and because of that, she would vote Democrat.
Scarborough praised Cheney’s decision and blasted the Republican Party as little more than a “personality cult” whose leader has “abandoned” conservative policies and voters.
You know what’s at issue here? We’re not talking really about the ideology of either of these candidates in large part because Donald Trump has no ideology. They are both racing to the center, so the lines are getting blurred. But, you know, somebody in the Republican Party who may attack Liz Cheney and say, ‘oh my gosh, so you’re going to abandon your pro-life position?’ Like Donald Trump? Are you talking about Donald Trump abandoning his pro-life position right in front of our eyes? No, not really. [Cheney’s] just voting for democracy. She’s voting so the constitutional republic endures with Madisonian checks and balances.
Scarborough continued to mock pro-Trump Republican criticism of conservative choosing Harris by pointing out the policies that the former president had either switched on or failed to deliver on.
‘What about the southern border? Are you going to abandon that issue?’ Like Donald Trump who killed the toughest bill ever? ‘What about the deficit? I thought you were a small government conservative?’ Donald Trump, biggest deficits ever, biggest debt ever, biggest federal budget ever when he was in office.
So, again, this is not about ideology because Donald Trump is not a conservative, something I’ve been saying since 2015. He doesn’t talk like a conservative. He’s abandoned conservatives on the issues that matter to them the most. So at this point, are you for a personality cult? You want to be in a personality cult, or do you want the republic to endure? That’s what it comes down to as far as the Republic as we have known it with Madisonian democracy and checks and balances. And Liz Cheney chose Madisonian democracy, and it shouldn’t be a shock.
