John Oliver Mocks President Obama’s Saudi Arabia Trip

In what has always been a fraught relationship, things have been particularly awkward recently between the United States and Saudi Arabia. As Congress pushes for legislation that would allow families of 9/11 victims to sue the kingdom in US courts, a law which the Obama administration opposes, and the administration considers releasing some portion of the 28 classified pages from the 9/11 Commission report that may implicate members of the Saudi government, President Obama traveled to Saudi Arabia last week for a conference of Gulf states.

As Last Week Tonight‘s John Oliver made clear Sunday night, the President got a chilly reception, from being snubbed at the airport right on down to the Saudi version of a C-Span cameraman who was filming the summit.

At one point, Oliver compared the airport snub to a child being deliberately left at soccer practice by his parents, after they’d already shown up and bought ice cream for several other kids. Watch the clip above, from Last Week Tonight.
