Katy Tur Confronts TX AG on School Safety: Are Students ‘Never Going to Be Safe?’

MSNBC’s Katy Tur spoke with Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton this afternoon about how future school shootings can be prevented after Friday’s horrific shooting at Santa Fe High School.

Tur directly asked Paxton, “Can you promise kids in Texas today that they’re safe to go to school?”

He responded, “I can say we’ve got a long way to go. I don’t think anybody can promise that at this point. I think there’s a lot that we can do.”

Paxton said Santa Fe High School in particular was moving in that direction and talked about the need for armed resource officers, as well as trained teachers with guns.

“I don’t think there’s any way to say that we’re ever 100 percent safe,” he continued. “You’ve always got to be vigilant. I think they need to continue to improve on their plan.”

And after showing the heartwrenching comments from a student who said “eventually it was going to happen here too,” Tur responded to his remarks:

“Is this just what we’re living in now? 2018, where the Attorney General of Texas and––I’m sure you’re doing your very best––will tell me on national news that we can’t keep kids safe, that they’re never going to be 100 percent safe? I mean, that, to me, just––I’m sorry, sir, but that’s wild!”

Paxton emphasized again that there’s “more we can do,” pointing to Israel and saying that the high school was not “done” implementing new protocols.
