Liberal Fox Host Invites Colleagues To Imagine If a Democrat Did What Trump Is Doing: ‘You Would Be Losing Your Mind’
Jessica Tarlov challenged her Fox News co-hosts to imagine an alternate reality where a Democratic president has taken the same heavy-handed measures that President Donald Trump has implemented.
Trump has wielded sweeping powers since taking office for the second time. He has purged nearly 10% of the federal workforce, frozen funds appropriated by Congress, deployed the National Guard to two U.S. cities to ostensibly fight crime, unilaterally imposed broad tariffs on dozens of countries, strong-armed universities and law firms, and removed members of independent federal agency boards, among other unusual moves.
On Thursday’s edition of The Five, Tarlov, the lone liberal on the show, invited her four conservative co-hosts to picture their reactions if a Democratic president acted in such a manner.
Let’s say a Democratic president had absolutely no respect for Congress, a coequal branch appropriating funds, right to determine tariff policy,” Tarlov said. “You’d be saying, ‘What is this? This isn’t what the Constitution wanted.'”
“I would not say that,” protested co-host Greg Gutfeld.
“Yes, you would,” Tarlov insisted.
“No, I wouldn’t,” he replied.
“Then you’re a bad constitutionalist,” Tarlov shot back. “Let’s say that a Democrat was deploying the National Guard to cities controlled by Republicans. Let’s say that a Democratic president was shaking down private businesses and saying, ‘Give me 10% of Intel, and maybe I’ll make things more favorable.'”
“That’s not shaking down,” Gutfeld claimed of Trump’s successful angling for a 10% U.S. government stake in the tech giant. “You’re applying your bias to every one of these things.”
“I am just giving you exactly what Donald Trump is doing,” she said. “Let’s say a Democratic president said, ‘I would like to control what goes in our museums, I would like to control American life on campuses. You would be losing your mind.”
“We could play this dystopian universe forever,” Gutfeld said.
“But you know that if a Democratic president was doing any of these things, you would be outraged,” Tarlov insisted.
“You can’t read my mind,” Gutfeld said.
“I know you well enough,” she responded.
