‘Looked in Command’: Fox News Analyst Praises Biden’s Normandy Speech
Fox & Friends covered the 80th anniversary of D-Day in Normandy, France where President Joe Biden delivered a speech commemorating the living veterans and soldiers who gave their lives during World War II. Bill McGurn, a Fox News analyst and director of speechwriting under former President George W. Bush, praised Biden for his comments and performance.
While McGurn, who is currently a member of the Wall Street Journal editorial board, had positive things to say about Biden’s speech, he still offered up several caveats to explain why former President Ronald Reagan’s speech on the 40th anniversary of D-Day was “a hard act to follow.” He told the co-hosts of Fox & Friends:
I was living in Belgium when Reagan came and delivered the 40th anniversary speech. So I remember that very well. I was also in Europe right after [former President Bill Clinton] gave the same speech 10 years later. Forty years later, Reagan is still a tough act to follow. I think Joe Biden did pretty well on the speech. No major stumbles. He looked in command. He wasn’t shouting. I think he delivered it very well. I think the words were fine. It was a well written speech. It hung together.
There’s also one reason Reagan is a hard act to follow: For a speech to be great, the man, the moment and the message have to come together. And they did in Reagan because he backed up his lofty words with the military buildup, with arming the Afghans with stingers and so forth, with opposing the Communist expansion in Latin America, deploying the Euro missiles. And I think, again, since Joe Biden has a record, it’s kind of weak. He opposed a lot of Reagan’s buildup in the ’80s against the old Soviet tyranny. And his defense budgets in real dollars after accounting for inflation are small and tiny. So I would like to see it matched by a bigger commitment to investment in the military so that when we do, when men and women do step forward to wear the uniform of our nation, they have the best equipment and a big advantage from that.
