Maher: Sanford Had ‘International F*ck Fiestas’ And Got Redemption, So Why Not Weiner For Dick Pics?

Bill Maher ended his show tonight bringing up the double standard of giving politicians caught up in sex scandals a second chance. New Yorkers are still very wary of Anthony Weiner, even as he plans a run for governor in New York, while Appalachian trail-hiker Mark Sanford gained not only forgiveness, but the Republican nomination for a seat in Congress. Maher surmised that the only reason Sanford gets redemption but Weiner doesn’t is because Sanford can say God forgave him, but Weiner doesn’t have that luxury.

Maher contrasted Sanford’s “week-long, international fuck fiestas with the girl from Ipanema” with Weiner just “asking Facebook people to like a picture of his junk.” He said that redemption is so much easier for Republicans than Democrats because religious conservatives love “a good redemption story.” Maher pointed out that everyone who always ask Jesus for forgiveness gets it, hoping for the day when the Lord will say “No, I’m still really mad at you right now!”

And not only has Sanford been forgiven, but no one seems to be questioning him appearing in public with his mistress. Maher found that odd, “because his whole schtick is ‘I sinned, I made a terrible mistake, it’s the worst thing I ever did… and here she is now, everybody!'”

But Weiner doesn’t get a “Jesus mulligan” because, as Maher pointed out, that kind of religious redemption doesn’t work as well with liberals. However, he held out hope that thanks to the internet, America has been revealed as a “nation of perverts” and maybe the nation has grown up since the Clinton era.

Maher concluded, “In the not-too-distant future, we will elect a president whose penis we have all seen. Please God, just let it not be Chris Christie.”
