Matthew Dowd On This Week: Rick Perry Looks And Sounds Too Much Like Bush
ABC political analyst and former George W. Bush election strategist Matthew Dowd was very impressed by Rick Perry on This Week today, but he thinks one of Perry’s problems going forward in the election is that he reminds people too much of his predecessor.
Dowd described Perry as “an incredible campaigner,” and described the current Texas governor as a better campaigner than his former boss. However, to many voters, Perry and Bush might be just a little too similar.
Part of his problem is he sounds a lot like George Bush. He looks like a president, though, if you look at the picture, but he sounds and has similar mannerisms to George Bush.
Dowd predicted this would not be a problem for Perry in the primaries, but most likely in the general election. However, he warned that Democrats should not underestimate Perry, because in the governor’s race he was able to beat Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison in the primary because of his effective campaign strategies, and that he “became Tea Party before Tea Party became cool.”
