McCain’s Fellow POWs Trash Trump: We Protect His Ability to Be Billionaire

Senator John McCain’s (R-AZ) fellow POWs responded Monday morning to celebrity plutocrat Donald Trump’s remarks essentially calling prisoners of war losers. “We were over there, in uniform, fighting for our way of life,” Captain Charlie Plumb told CNN’s New Day. “We were in uniform to protect Donald Trump’s right to free speech.”

Plumb then twisted the knife. “I thought about this immediately when I heard Trump’s remarks: if it hadn’t been for men and women in uniforms, if we’d all gotten deferments in college, there’d be no opportunity to be a billionaire in the United States.”

Later, Colonel Leo Thorsness — a Medal of Honor recipient — was more magnanimous, imploring Trump to apologize for the remarks because “he’s smarter than that.”

“If you measured success by dollars — Americans do that sometimes — certainly he’s successful, but there’s a lot of ways to measure it and one way to measure it is you don’t build yourself up by tearing other people down,” Thorsness said. “He calls other candidates stupid and dumb. He’s a bright guy, but he could do so much better and I wish he weren’t so boisterous and arrogant and self-serving.”

“He says things people like, Congress is bad and politicians are bad, but at some point he’s going to have to decide if I win, what would I do?” Thorsness said. “Get specific rather than just condemning others.” (That boat’s still docking.)
