Mediaite’s Rachel Sklar Talks Stewart Fallout & Olbermann Suspension on Reliable Sources

Mediaite’s Editor-at-Large Rachel Sklar appeared on CNN’s Reliable Sources this morning with the New York Times‘ David Carr and host Howard Kurtz to discuss the impact of last week’s Jon Stewart/Stephen Colbert rally and cable news — and the recent suspension of Keith Olbermann by MSNBC.

While Carr argued that the impact of cable news is limited to five million viewers a night and that most Americans aren’t paying attention to cable news, Sklar responded:

“We live in a clip culture now — with the rise of embeddable code, the distribution of all these cable news clips, and frankly Stewart and Colbert, just goes so wide. We do a lot of the clip culture stuff at Mediaite; the Huffington Post, it’s part of their bread and butter; Gawker launched Gawker TV because of it. It’s a different world out there and so the reach is enormous and is amplified by Twitter. So your water cooler moments are a result of next-day pickup. And of course the media is paying attention to that and that drives the news cycle on a larger level.”
