Mike Johnson Threatens Liberals With a Good Time: ‘If Democrats Took Over the House… They’d Impeach’ Trump
Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) simultaneously offered Republicans a warning while giving Democrats something to hope for: another impeachment of President Donald Trump if the Democrats retake the House of Representatives.
Johnson appeared on Tuesday’s edition of The Ingraham Angle on Fox News just a few hours before the federal government was set to shut down at 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday. House Republicans passed a continuing resolution to fund the government through Nov. 21, but on Tuesday, the measure failed to garner the requisite 60 votes to overcome a key procedural hurdle. Sen. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) wants Republicans to agree to extend Covid-era healthcare premium subsidies under Obamacare, which are set to expire on Dec. 31. Republicans have balked so far.
“It’s a very important period of time that will allow the appropriators in both parties… to do their job,” Johnson told Laura Ingraham. “They’ve got 12 separate appropriations bills done through the committee in the House. The Senate’s working through them as well. We just need more time to process it through both chambers. If we have until November 21, we are very optimistic.”
“It’s a nightmare and it’s always the nightmare before Christmas,” Ingraham said of congressional sausage-making. “It’s always up until then. Speaker Johnson, you have a very, very narrow majority. On a scale of 1-10, how likely is it that the Republicans build on this very slim majority next year?”
“We’re gonna win the midterms,” Johnson predicted. “Absolutely. We’re gonna have a big victory. And I think we can expand that majority so we can keep going. We have to give President Trump four years and not two. Imagine if the Democrats took over the House… they’d impeach him.”
Trump was impeached twice by the House in his first term. In the first instance, the House impeached the president for withholding foreign aid from Ukraine in exchange for that country’s government investigating Joe Biden and his family. The second impeachment stemmed from Trump’s attempt to overturn the 2020 election while also triggering an insurrection at the Capitol.
