Morning Joe Slams Sarah Sanders Defense of Trump’s Anti-Muslim Retweets: Using Lies to ‘Foment Hate’
Sarah Huckabee Sanders was torn apart by Morning Joe today after her “stunning” defense of President Trump‘s tweeting of unverified Islamophobic videos.
After Trump shared three clips posted by an anti-Muslim British extremist, Sanders dismissed critics by saying “the threats are real” even if the president was sharing false propaganda. The retweets were condemned by various members of the British government, through Trump dismissed criticisms from Prime Minister Theresa May with a botched retort on Twitter.
In light of these developments, Carol Lee called Sanders’ defense “spin on a whole new level,” and Willie Geist found it remarkable that the press secretary would double down after Trump shared a statement from by a convicted hate criminal. Mika Brzezinski also joined the fray, asking guest Heidi Pryzbyla about the connotations of White House staffers allowing Trump to dabble in conspiracy theories.
“It’s a defense at all costs and a denial of the facts,” the USA Today reporter said. “To say whether this is real or not doesn’t matter is completely outrageous, because the whole point of these videos the reason they are spliced and misrepresented is because they are intended to use lies in order to foment hate.”
Brian Klass focused on how Trump’s tweets basically caused a diplomatic incident, and he noted how many British citizens have come up to him and asked “have we lost our minds?” Joe Scarborough argued in the meantime that Trump has gone from defending racism in Charlottesville to neo-facism abroad.
