NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Fracking: ‘I’m Not a Scientist’

“Well, I’m not an expert in that field, so I don’t feel qualified to comment.”

That was one of the six phrases outlined in Mediaite’s list of six things we wish cable news pundits would say more often, and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo perhaps unknowingly took that to heart last week when asked about the U.S.’s response to the ongoing Ebola mess.

“You know, it’s not my field, I’m a lawyer, and I like to sort of stay in what I know or stay far away from something that I have no idea about,” Cuomo said of Ebola.

And now he is applying that same logic to his opinion about fracking. During a gubernatorial debate last night, Cuomo’s Republican opponent Rob Astorino said New York should follow the examples of Pennsylvania, Ohio, North Dakota, and other states and allow fracking in their state.

But Cuomo cleverly dodged the question with this response: “I’m not a scientist. Let the scientists decide. It’s very complicated, very controversial, academic studies come out all different ways. Let the experts decide.”
