‘Oh, You Gotta Be Kidding With That’: Trump Can’t Believe Reporter’s Question About Jeffrey Epstein
President Donald Trump recoiled in disbelief when a reporter asked him about Jeffrey Epstein.
Trump golfed at his resort in Turnberry, Scotland on Sunday and also announced the U.S. and E.U. reached a framework for a trade agreement.
“The European Union is going to agree to purchase from the United States $750 billion worth of energy,” he said. “They are going to agree to invest into the United States $600 billion more than they’re investing already.”
The framework comes amid a looming U.S. tariff hike on E.U. imports to 30% on Aug. 1, up from the current figure of 10%.
“Mr. President,” a reporter said to Trump, “was part of the rush to get this deal done to know the Jeffrey Epstein story out of–”
“Oh, you gotta be kidding with that,” the president interrupted. “No, had nothing to do with it. Only you would think that. That had nothing to do with it.”
Trump took another question, answered it, and ended the press gaggle.
Trump has been dogged by questions about Epstein in recent weeks after his Department of Justice declined to release its documents regarding Epstein and his associates. That decision angered some Trump supporters and garnered the attention of the press, which has been revisiting their friendship.
The president has done himself no favors in that regard. Last week, his former criminal attorney, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, interviewed former Epstein associate and convicted child sex trafficker Ghislane Maxwell, who is currently serving a 20-year federal prison sentence. When asked about the possibility of pardoning Maxwell, Trump did not rule it out, stating, “I’m allowed to do it.”
Trump has tried to deflect attention from Epstein by insisting that “only pretty bad people” want to keep talking about the case. In recent days, his administration has begun advancing the conspiracy theory that former President Barack Obama and his administration conspired to undermine Trump for a decade.
