OUCH: Newsom Accuses DeSantis of Trying to ‘Out-Trump Trump – And By the Way, How’s That Going For You, Ron?’

California Governor Gavin Newsom twisted the knife during his Fox News debate with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis by citing his paltry poll numbers in the Republican primary. During the event on Thursday, Newsom accused him of trying to “out-Trump Trump.”

Former President Donald Trump is lapping the GOP presidential field, including DeSantis, who at one point was viewed by some as a threat to wrest the nomination from him. That hasn’t materialized, as DeSantis is consistently well behind, polling in either second or third depending on the survey.

The debate addressed a wide range of topics, including illegal immigration. Moderator Sean Hannity showed a graphic showing the number of foreign nationals “found” at the southern border over the last two years. Many of the nationals hailed from China, Russia, Iran, Syria and Afghanistan.

Hannity asked the candidates if that fact increases the odds of terror attacks in the U.S. being perpetrated by people who crossed the southern border illegally.

“The odds are 100%,” DeSantis replied. “Of course our enemies are gonna take advantage of this. [President Joe Biden] opened the border. He’s violating his oath of office to take care that the laws are faithfully executed.”

DeSantis noted that fentanyl is coming across the border and is killing Americans. He then predicted there will be a terror attack in the U.S. that originated at the southern border

“By the way, do you see that risk, Governor Newsom?” Hannity asked.

Newsom replied by hitting DeSantis by alluding to the governor sending planes to Texas to pick up migrants, who were then flown to Martha’s Vineyard off the coast of Massachusetts because it is a so-called “sanctuary” area for migrants.

“I support border security,” he replied. I think the asylum system is broken. I believe– I’m the only guy here that’s a border state governor. You are trolling folks and trying to find migrants to play political games to try to get some news and attention so you can out-Trump Trump – and by the way, how’s that going for you, Ron? You are down 41 points in your own home state.”

Newsom pivoted back to immigration and finished his response.
