Pod Save America Hosts Tell The View Dems Are ‘Down Bad’: ‘We Got To Get Our Act Together’

Pod Save America’s Tommy Vietor argued Democrats are “down bad” and need to “get our act together” when it comes to communicating with voters.

Vietor and Pod Save America co-hosts Jon Lovett and Jon Favreau joined The View on Friday and the once aides for former President Barack Obama reflected on the 2024 election and President Donald Trump’s victory.

The podcast hosts offered up plenty of criticism of Trump, including his Jan. 6 pardons, but also gave notes to their own party. Vietor summed up the criticism when asked how Democrats can “unite” following their election loss to Trump. Vietor said Democrats are “down bad” and it will take some “infighting” before they can rally together.

Vietor argued:

I think we’re down bad right now. We have to be honest about that. I don’t like infighting for infighting’s sake. I think one thing that harmed the Democrats though over the last couple of years was a lack of candor and not being honest with ourselves that there are a lot of voters who felt like Joe Biden was too old to get another four years and they were rejecting his candidacy. And you could see it in polling, you could see it in primaries, and Democrats said, ‘you know what, it’s fine, everything will be okay, Trump is bad and therefore that will offset that.’ So I think candor is good, getting back to first principles about who we are and what we stand for is important. We need to be a party that is pro-worker, that is anti-war, that is anti-establishment, that is anti-money in politics, and if it takes a little fighting to get there than I’m okay with it, but you’re right, eventually we got to our act together.

Asked whether former President Joe Biden was correct in theorizing he would have defeated Trump, the podcast hosts dismissed the idea. Lovett argued former Vice President Kamala Harris prevented what would have been a “landslide” victory for Republicans.

“His own polling showed that Donald Trump was going to win 400 electoral votes, 400-plus,” Favreau said. “And this I maybe don’t blame Joe Biden for. His people, the people closest to him, refused to show him the polling, the real polling.”
