Rand Paul Throws Shade at Lindsey Graham During Fox Hit, Accuses Him of Wanting to ‘Secretly Explode’ Pentagon Spending
Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) went out of his way to hit Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) over Republicans’ massive spending bill on Wednesday.
The Senate is taking up legislation passed by the House that would, among many other provisions, cut Medicaid and extend the 2017 tax cuts that are set to expire at the end of the year. Paul said that although he backs the tax cut extensions, he opposes the bill because it raises the debt ceiling, which is the maximum amount the federal government may borrow, by $5 trillion. The legislation would also add $2.4 trillion to the country’s deficits over the next 10 years, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.
Paul appeared on Wednesday’s Kudlow on Fox Business, where he compared Congress to intoxicated teenagers.
“If you have teenage children and you gave them a credit card and they maxed out $2,000 on booze and gambling, would you give them a bigger credit line or a smaller credit line?” he said. “Congress is worse than a bunch of drunken teenagers. They have a history of not being fiscally responsible. You should give them a very short debt ceiling increase and say, ‘Show me and prove to me you’ll act responsibly, and I’ll give you more money.'”
Paul said he would vote for the bill were it not for the debt ceiling hike.
“I’m sure that issue can be worked out,” host Larry Kudlow said, trying to reassure Paul. “I don’t see that as a really big obstacle.” Kudlow went on to call the debt ceiling issue “symbolic” because Congress will simply raise it when necessary.
Paul pivoted to the spending in the bill and threw shade at Graham over the increased budget for the Department of Defense.
“This bill is really a vehicle for Lindsey Graham to secretly explode beyond on the military budget,” Paul replied. “They want to explode the military budget beyond the caps. That’s what the bill is about. So, there is a lot of new spending in this bill. If the new spending weren’t in there, it truly would be a bill that would be saving money.”
Apparently wanting to avoid further criticism of Graham, Kudlow replied that they could discuss Paul’s colleague “in another segment.”
Earlier in the day, Trump said he agrees with Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), who called for the debt ceiling to be eliminated.
