Rep. Gosar’s Sister ‘Still Incensed’ Over Violent AOC Video, Calls Follow-Up Statement ‘Complete Garbage’
The sister of Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) said Saturday that she is “still incensed” after the congressman posted an anime clip of him killing Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).
Jennifer Gosar, a vocal critic of her older brother, called him “a sociopath” soon after the clip was first posted. On Saturday, she reiterated that sentiment but noted that he “wasn’t always like that.”
“When you have an older sibling they are of idol status,” Gosar told CNN’s Pamela Brown. “They are rock stars. So I remember waiting up for him having a hard time sleeping, so excited to see my dreamy big brother.”
“During his first run for office in 2010, it was apparent to me that there was something much more that I didn’t know about my brother and that is where I really saw his bigotry take public stage,” Gosar said.
The congressman favors a hardline stance on immigration, cutting national debt and anti-abortion policies. Before the AOC clip, he came under criticism for anti-Muslim associations and calling Covid-19 the “Wuhan virus,” among other things.
And earlier in the week, he posted an anime video depicting him killing Ocasio-Cortez. The video spurred House Democrats to launch an effort to censure him.
A spokesperson from his office defended the video in a statement: “Everyone needs to relax. The left doesn’t get meme culture. They have no joy. They are not the future. It’s a cartoon.”
His sisters says she is “still incensed” about the post.
“The thought of his misogyny manifest in the anime video, the fact that not only was he targeting a very effective and insightful woman — a woman of color in particular — again dehumanizing her, dehumanizing the immigrants that he depicted in the video, the glorification, the fascism on full display… the level of frustration is intense,” Jennifer Gosar said.
Asked by Brown whether she believed his statement in response to the backlash that denounced violence against any member of Congress, Gosar said “it is complete garbage.”
“This is a pattern that we’ve seen,” she said.
