Republican Strategist Scolded For Making Trump Weight Joke on CNN: ‘No Body-Shaming’

A Republican strategist who is skeptical of a report that Donald Trump stopped eating after his 2020 election loss made a crack on CNN about the ex-president’s weight.

The comment drew a light rebuke from another guest and CNN’s Jake Tapper.

In a new memoir by former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), the ex-lawmaker says she chewed out Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) for visiting Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate just weeks after the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, where assailants tried to stop the certification of his election loss.

“Mar-a-Lago? What the hell, Kevin?” she asked him at the time.

“They’re really worried,” McCarthy reportedly replied. “Trump’s not eating, so they asked me to come see him.”

During Tuesday’s episode of The Lead, Jake Tapper said that detail is surprising considering Trump is a man of “healthy appetites” before stating, “I don’t mean that disparagingly.”

Later in the show, he spoke with GOP strategist Kevin Madden and Democratic strategist Ashley Allison, both of whom are CNN commentators.

“They’re rationalizing their support for Trump,” Madden said of McCarthy’s “not eating” line.

“Can I just say that if the Republican Party wants somebody who is not eating because he can’t accept the results of an election – like, this is the leader of the free world that has nuclear codes – that’s who they want? Ok.”

“He doesn’t look like he wasn’t eating,” Madden cracked.

“No body-shaming,” Allison told him.

“No body-shaming,” Tapper echoed.
