Stewart Grills Samantha Power: WH Rhetoric Doesn’t Match Reality on ISIS

Jon Stewart sat down with U.N. Ambassador Samantha Power and confronted her about how the U.S. government’s rhetoric on ISIS doesn’t seem to match the reality of what they’re willing to do.

Stewart first asked Power why it always has to be the United States to lead in situations like these. Power argued that U.S. leadership is “critical in mobilizing a coalition” but ultimately they do want that coalition to be led by forces on the ground. Stewart still wanted to know why this won’t just be a repeat of other foreign military ventures and why nations like Saudi Arabie “with powerful militaries” can’t handle it themselves.

And when President Obama says the thousands of forces going into Iraq are just ‘advisors,” to Stewart, that sounds a little “Vietnam-y.” He asked Power how Obama can talk about ISIS as a huge existential threat that needs to be taken out, but constantly hedging about how much he’s willing to put into the fight.
