‘The Biggest Warning Sign’: CNN’s Enten Sounds Alarm on Trump’s Tanking Approval With Independent Voters
CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten explained why President Donald Trump’s cratering approval among independent voters could spell doom for the Republican Party ahead of the midterm elections.
On Friday morning, Enten reacted to Trump’s latest polling among independents and broke down why he considers it the “biggest warning sign” for the party as a whole. According to a July poll from Gallup, the president’s net approval sat at -35% within that voter group. When he first got into office, his independent approval was -2%. Trump’s average among all polls had dropped from -3% in January to -29% in July.
“That is a drop of over 25 points with a key part of the electorate,” Enten said. “If you’re not winning among independents, you’re probably not winning overall — and when your net approval rating’s minus-29 points, you’re definitely not winning overall when you’re that low with independents.”
Trump’s average net approval of -29% among independents was the worst on record for the first six months of a presidential term. As noted by Enten, Trump beat his own record of -23% at the start of his first term in 2017.
The data analyst also examined the issue on which Trump polled relatively well at the start of his second term: inflation and the economy. Despite former President Joe Biden coming in at -38% approval on inflation, Trump somehow topped that with a staggering -45%.
“Oh my goodness gracious!” Enten said “Minus-45 points! I never thought I’d see the day — especially this early on in the Trump administration. The issue that in large part got him elected is at this point the issue, more so than any other, that is dragging him down.
“If this is what we have on midterm day come 2026, I can promise you this: the Republican majority in the House, you can wave ‘Adios, amigos, goodbye,’ to it because Republicans, simply put, can’t win with this number.”
