‘They Think They Know Everything!’ MSNBC’s Capehart Swipes at ‘Obama People’ Shutting Out the ‘Next Generation’ of Dems
MSNBC’s Jonathan Capehart says “Obama people” can “come across like they think they know everything,” and it’s time for them to get out of the way for the “next generation.”
Capehart joined Jonathan Lemire on Morning Joe on Tuesday where he discussed the shifting coalitions in the Democratic Party in the wake of the 2024 presidential election loss. While the party was once in the hands of a coalition put together by former President Barack Obama, Capehart said, but that is changing.
“I think that’s why one of the primary reasons why I think President Obama has been scarce, is that he — everyone’s looking for him to save the day. And what they keep saying is, ‘No, no, no, no, it’s not about us. It’s about you.’ And it seems like the party can’t seem to come to grips with that and deal with that,” Capehart said.
He argued Obama had a big win with his 2008 presidential victory, but it wasn’t long before Democrats lost control of the House and Senate as Obama’s “luster” became not enough to rely on for votes.
“The Obama people come in, they’re the new blood, and now people are starting to complain, ‘Oh my God, the Obama people, they’re running everything.’ Some of the criticism, I think, is valid. There is — sometimes you get a sense that they think they know everything, they run the world, and in some cases you can understand it because, well, they did win two presidential elections,” Capehart said.
The “next generation” will need to be more center in the picture going forward, he added, if Democrats want to grow their reach to younger voters.
“at a certain point, that class of folks has to start listening to the next generation coming up because they have ideas, they have ways of reaching out to the voters, to men, to the Obama coalition that they just don’t have — they don’t have the feel for it because they’re not from that generation,” Capehart said.
