Tillerson on Trump’s Commitment to Defending US Values: ‘The President Speaks for Himself’

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson made a rather stunning comment as he spoke with Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday this morning about President Trump and American values.

Wallace brought up how a U.N. committee criticized Trump’s reaction to Charlottesville, before showing a clip of Trump “talking more about the media” in his Phoenix rally.

He asked Tillerson, “Does that make it harder for you to push American values around the world when some foreign leaders question the President’s values?”

Tillerson insisted, “We express America’s values from the State Department.”

Wallace pressed him further on whether the world is doubting “whether we’re living those values.” Tillerson said, “I don’t believe anyone doubts the American people’s values or the commitment of the American government or the government’s agencies to advancing those values and defending those values.”

Wallace asked, “And the President’s values?”

Tillerson said, “The President speaks for himself, Chris.”

Wallace asked him if he’s “separating” himself from that. Tillerson simply said, “I’ve spoken, I’ve made my own comments as to our values as well in a speech I gave to the State Department this past week.”
