Tim Scott Battles CNN’s Abby Phillip Over Trump Vowing Revenge: ‘You Can’t Correct Me’
Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) and CNN’s Abby Phillip mixed it up on Thursday night, with the senator telling the host he is uncorrectable.
Like other Republicans rumored to be on Trump’s vice presidential running mate shortlist, Scott made the TV rounds on Thursday and denounced the guilty verdict a New York jury handed the former president earlier in the day. Trump was convicted on 34 counts of falsifying business records to cover up hush money payments he made to conceal extramarital affairs ahead of the 2016 presidential election.
Republicans roundly slammed the verdict as a travesty while also claiming it will be a boon to his campaign.
Trump – the presumptive GOP nominee – has promised “retribution” if he returns to the White House. The ex-president has vowed to appoint a prosecutor to target President Joe Biden and his family.
“When former President Trump says that if he is elected president, he would appoint a special prosecutor to ‘go after the most corrupt president in the history of the United States of America, Joe Biden, and the entire Biden crime family,’ are you saying that that is not something that you would support?”
“I’m simply saying that President Trump has said it himself,” Scott replied. “The best revenge is success.”
Trump has indeed said, “My revenge will be success.” However, he has also said the other things.
“Actually, Senator, I have to correct you on that,” said Phillip, though Scott was correct – even if he did not acknowledge Trump’s more troubling comments.
“No, you can’t correct me on this, Abby,” Scott protested.
“I’m looking at the notes right here,” she said. “He has explicitly said that they–”
“I was actually in his presence when he said it himself,” the senator retorted before taking a jab at CNN’s ratings.
“This is why the ratings on CNN are so low,” he said. “The bottom line is simply this. Without question, President Trump has looked me in my eyes in a room full of other folks and said, ‘You know what? The best revenge is success.’ Let’s not make this about just Donald Trump.”
“Senator, he may have said it to you in a private room, but he has said it to thousands of his supporters that he plans to go after his political enemies. I don’t understand how you can deny that he has said that publicly. It’s in the public record.”
“I don’t know how you will not take my own word for what I heard with my own ears,” Scott replied.
