Trump Claims Fed Chair Is ‘Building a Palace for Himself’ Day After Revealing Plan for $200 Million Golden Ballroom
President Donald Trump accused Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell of “building a palace for himself,” saying that Powell is “not going to be there much longer” in an interview Friday with Newsmax’s Rob Finnerty.
When asked by Finnerty if it’s possible he will remove Powell, Trump expressed frustration over the Fed’s ongoing multibillion-dollar renovations. “I would remove him in a heartbeat, but they say it would disturb the market,” Trump said.
“[The building] is not that intricate inside to start off with,” he continued, referencing the renovations. “I know more about renovating buildings or building buildings than anybody, maybe,” citing real estate ventures of his own.
“It’s way over budget by hundreds of millions of dollars, and he shouldn’t be doing that. It’s almost like he’s building a palace for himself, but he’s not going to be there much longer anyway. That’s the good news. He’ll never get to use it,” Trump said.
The President’s comments come just a day after news broke of his plans for a $200 million gold-plated ballroom complete with crystal chandeliers at the White House. Artist renderings of the ballroom shown by Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt at Thursday’s presser drew comparisons online to Versailles.
Trump ended his answer to Finnerty’s question with the claim that “the Fed rate is too high, interest rates are too high, but despite that, we have a great economy.”
