‘Trump Conducts Most of His Business From a Golf Course’: McGovern Fires Back at Republican Opposing Remote Voting
Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA) hit back at Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) after she forcefully spoke out against allowing new parents to vote by proxy.
Shortly after, the House ultimately thwarted a procedural measure that would have enabled leadership to change the chamber’s rules to prevent such voting.
Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) spearheaded the effort, which dealt a blow to Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), who opposes proxy voting, even for new parents. She was one of nine Republicans who voted with Democrats to tank the procedural measure.
Before the vote, Foxx gave a floor speech slamming proxy voting.
“Put simply, members of Congress need to show up for work,” she said. “I support this rule and I urge my colleagues to support it on the floor.”
McGovern spoke immediately after and noted all the times Republicans voted by proxy during the pandemic.
“After listening to the distinguished chairman of the Rules Committee, my head’s about to explode,” he said. “She talked about how disastrous it was when we had proxy voting during Covid. Yeah, so disastrous that a hundred sixty-two Republicans actually voted by proxy. She talked about how it was unconstitutional – so unconstitutional that the current speaker of the House on multiple occasions voted by proxy 39 different times.”
He then pivoted to President Donald Trump, who regularly travels to his home and golf resort at Mar-a-Lago in West Palm Beach, Florida:
But she doesn’t seem to be that upset over the fact that Donald Trump conducts most of his business from a golf course in Mar-a-Lago. She doesn’t seem to be very upset over the fact that the FBI director, Kash Patel, is asking to work remotely from Las Vegas. She doesn’t seem that upset that there are people on the Rules Committee who use proxy voting to go to a CPAC convention to basically listen to political rhetoric from people on the extreme right wing.
I mean, the bottom line is Republicans love to talk about family values, but when given the chance to actually support families, they turn their backs.
