Trump Flat Out Lied About 60 Minutes Interview He’s Suing CBS Over During Hannity Interview

President Donald Trump re-upped his provably false accusation that CBS News program 60 Minutes willfully misled its viewers by using an answer from “20 minutes later” during a lengthy sit down with Sean Hannity and Elon Musk.

Trump is suing CBS News for and claiming an absurd $20 billion in damages, while the FCC takes comments on a public complaint of “news distortion.” At issue? CBS aired a clip from the 60 Minutes election special during a Sunday morning episode of Face the Nation in which the Democratic presidential candidate responded to Bill Whitaker’s question ostensibly about Israel not following the Biden administration’s lead. The answer that aired on 60 Minutes, however, was different.

Trump initially sued CBS for $10 billion, claiming election interference. Later, he doubled that with a specious claim of “unfair competition” under the federal Lanham Act. The claim also alleges that Trump was harmed by CBS’s conduct due to his role as an owner of the Truth Social platform.

During an interview taped Saturday at the White House and aired on Fox News Monday evening, Trump, Musk, and Hannity all seemed in agreement that the legacy media are horrible liars who promote conspiracies and are trying to forge some wedge between the president and his special advisor, who has unique access to the inner workings of the Government with DOGE, the agency he leads but is not the leader of, according to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. But I digress…

During an angry harangue in which Trump blasted MSNBC, CNN, and AP, he pivoted to CBS.

“CBS is terrible,” Trump said. “I mean, CBS now, they changed an answer in Kamala. They asked her some questions, she answered them like, you know, a low IQ person, the opposite of the absolute opposite. But she gave a horrible answer. They took the entire answer out and they put another answer that she gave 20 minutes later into the interview as her answers.”

Hannity jumped in to agree, saying “part of her word salad,” to which Trump added, “I’ve never even heard of that. I thought I heard of it all.”

The thing is — this is patently false. And it’s proven by the interview transcripts and raw footage CBS released under orders of newly appointed FCC chair Brendan Carr as I explained in a lengthy column from 10 days ago. CBS did make a mistake by using two different parts of the same answer for both clips. But they are they are part of the same answer, as evidenced by the publicly available transcript.

The full reply from Harris is below. Portions of it were aired at different times by CBS. In a clip teased on Sunday show Face the Nation, CBS aired the first part of her answer, which I’ve highlighted in blue. The portion that aired on 60 Minutes is in red.

“Well, Bill, the work that we have done has resulted in a number of movements in that region by Israel that were very much prompted by, or a result of many things, including our advocacy for what needs to happen in the region. And we’re not going to stop doing that. We are not going to stop pursuing what is necessary for the United States to be clear about where we stand on the need for this war to end.“

Whitaker’s question is notably also clipped to be tighter in the preview that aired on Face the Nation, which is another example of the very editorial judgment every show uses to condense an answer for time and clarity.

So Trump’s claim that CBS put in a different answer from 20 minutes later is false. Given his proximity to this case, the scale of his legal actions (and chilling effect on the media), and, therefore, his lying about it, he should know precisely what he’s talking about. If he isn’t aware of the specifics, well, that’s a more damning indictment of the misinformation he has consumed and irresponsibly amplified. Either way, not a great moment for the commander-in-chief.

For his part, Hannity did not challenge the president on his falsehood, and, charitably, perhaps he was unaware of the particular details, which may seem small but are significant. The Fox News host quickly pivoted to “outrageous money being spent” by the federal government as a means to save time.
