Trump: ‘Human Trafficking Is Worse Than It’s Ever Been In the History of the World’
During a trip to Key West today, President Donald Trump attended a briefing on anti-drug trafficking efforts. And following the briefing, the president made some comments that are obviously going to raise a few eyebrows.
After discussing how much the American people appreciate the work of the Joint Interagency Task Force South for their work in stopping drug trafficking into the United States and railing against sanctuary cities, the president made an interesting observation about the issue of human trafficking.
“People are really appreciating the work you are doing on stopping drugs from pouring into this country,” Trump declared. “We can’t emphasize enough, not only drugs. Drugs are a big factor. But you look at human trafficking is worse than it’s ever been in the history of this world. Who would think in this modern age?”
He continued, “They are using the Internet better than practically anybody uses the Internet. It really is a big problem.”
It would appear that the president forgot about mass slavery through the 19th century.
UPDATE 2:40 PM ET: There have been some recent studies that suggest that in terms of raw numbers, there are more people forced into some form of slavery and forced labor today than at any time in human history. At the same time, with the world’s population at its highest level, slavery is likely not at its highest per capita level right now.
