WATCH: CNN’s Bill Weir Gives His Own Money to Helpless Hurricane Victim

As over 3 million US citizens struggle to survive in hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico, a moment of kindness between two Americans offered a glimmer of hope in the crisis.

After Maria — a Category 4 hurricane with winds reaching 150 mph — struck the Caribbean island, many lost their homes, belongings, and access to food and water, as was the case for a woman CNN interviewed identified only as Britney.

“I have no fucking money, they won’t let us get money,” cried out Britney — a Brooklynite who moved to Puerto Rico four years ago and is now struggling financially as the island became a cash-only society when electricity was lost.

In a segment featured on CNN Newsroom, reporter Bill Weir interviewed Britney — and after her distraught cries over losing access to her funds, Weir offered the island resident money out of his own pocket. Britney accepted the money and immediately embraced Weir, crying out with tears of joy — the CNN journalist responded in kind, hugging the stranger he had just helped.

“There’s no help — this is the only help… Private citizens have come through for us and no one else really has,” said Britney.

In times of catastrophe, moments of compassion bubble to the surface for all humans to unite around — and something as simple as giving all that you can to those who need it most is an example of just that. While covering Hurricane Harvey’s damage in Texas, CNN had a number of such similar moments — one of the network’s crews saved an elderly couple trapped in a flooded home, while another crew offered a helpless man their satellite phone so he could make a call to his father and assure him of his safety.

While cable news is often disparaged as one long shouting match further polarizing the country, simple instances of kindness can restore our faith in humanity and serve to remind us that we’re all just people — even journalists.
