House Majority Whip Steve Scalise received a hero’s welcome when he appeared before Congress to deliver his first speech since he was wounded during the Congressional Baseball shooting back in June.
Representatives convened in the House Chamber on Thursday morning, and when Scalise walked in with his crutches, he received several minutes of fanfare while greeting his colleagues.
After the initial welcome, House Speaker Paul Ryan commended Scalise and his family for their bravery and strength before allowing the Louisiana congressman to take the floor.
For an inside look in the chamber, Politico reporter Jake Sherman tweeted about the rapturous applause that met Scalise:
I’ve seen presidents, foreign leaders, the pope in the House chamber. I’ve never seen anyone applauded like Steve Scalise today.
