WATCH: Kevin McCarthy Dodges Hard When Kristen Welker Asks if He’s a ‘MAGA Republican’
Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy dodged when asked if he’s a “MAGA Republican,” and why hasn’t he endorsed Donald Trump’s 2024 run for president by now.
McCarthy joined NBC’s Kristen Welker on Sunday for Meet the Press — where he was questioned about the disarray in Congress following his ouster as speaker and the House of Representatives’ subsequent inability to vote in a successor. Welker wound up pressing McCarthy on Trump’s influence over the speakership, seeing as the former president endorsed Rep. Jim Jordan’s (R-OH) failed bid but is opposed to the newly-declared bid of House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN).
McCarthy didn’t directly answer Welker’s question, so she pressed him on exactly where he stands with Trump:
WELKER: Let me just ask you quite simply, why haven’t you endorsed him yet?
MCCARTHY: Well, the campaign is still going. There’s a very good chance I would endorse President Trump…
WELKER: He’s the clear frontrunner! What are you waiting for?
MCCARTHY: Well, you know what? Because I’ve got a southern border wide open. I have war in the Middle East. I’ve got things I’m focused on right now. I believe President Trump will be our nominee and I believe President Trump will get re-elected.
WELKER: Are you still a MAGA Republican, Mr. Speaker?
MCCARTHY: You know what? I am a conservative Republican from the beginning to the end. That’s what I’ve always been. You can try to phrase different names to people, but I’m proud of who I am.
Welker wrapped up the conversation with McCarthy’s refusal to outright wear the yoke of Trump’s supporters.
