WATCH LIVE: French President Emmanuel Macron Addresses Congress
French president Emmanuel Macron will speak before the House and Senate today in a joint address to Congress. The speech is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. EST.
Macron’s speech will focus on the relationship between the U.S. and France, and it will probably shed some light on the issues he discussed with President Donald Trump. The president is wishing Macron well after they spent the last two days together holding talks inside the White House.
Busy day planned. Looking forward to watching President Macron of France address a Joint Session of Congress today. This is a great honor and seldom allowed to be done…he will be GREAT!

In terms of policy issues, it is likely Macron will use his time with Congress in order to recommend that the U.S. stays in the Iran nuclear deal. PBS reports that even though Macron has several problems with the deal, he still thinks it helps the world keep track of Iran’s nuclear activities, and it may lead to new agreements down the line. Trump made it clear yesterday that he’s still opposed to the deal, calling it a “terrible” agreement from the Obama era.
Macron is also expected to talk about the ongoing civil war in Syria. Earlier this month, American and French forces teamed up and launched a missile strike in retaliation for Bashar al-Assad‘s alleged use of chemical weapons. Even though Trump recently said that he wants U.S. forces withdrawn from the region, Macron says he has spoken to his U.S. counterpart and convinced him to stay in Syria until they find a resolution to the current situation.
