Biden Jokes About Age And Memory At White House Event — Gets Huge Reaction From Crowd
President Joe Biden pointedly joked about his age and memory following the uproar over the Special Counsel report and got a huge reaction from the crowd at an ostensibly nonpartisan White House event.
Special counsel Robert Hur’s report on Biden’s handling of sensitive documents dropped Thursday. The good news for Biden is there will be no charges against the president — but the bad news is the report is chock full of damaging asides about him and his memory.
Biden responded to the report Thursday night in a fiery press scrum, and other officials and allies have followed suit.
The president made what appeared to be a very pointed reference to the attacks on his age and memory during Monday’s White House event.
Biden spoke to the National Association of Counties Legislative Conference at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C., and received an enthusiastic response when he was introduced.
And in one chunk of the speech, he made an aside about his age and his memory that drew a laugh, and then a loud and sustained cheer:
My administration is also helping install rooftop solar, to build national network of electric vehicle charging stations. We’re revitalizing fenceline communities smothered by the legacy of pollution, like where I lived in Claremont.
We’re promoting clean energy in industries of the future. Made here in America. Made in America!
What I didn’t realize, and I’ve been around — I know I don’t look like I’ve been around awhile. (laughter)
I do remember that.
(cheers and applause)
But, you know, there’s so much we’re getting done. I signed the CHIPS and Science — (indistinct shout) Okay. I signed the CHIPS and Science Act.
According to pool reports, the ballroom at the Hilton — where the White House Correspondents’ Dinner is held — was “packed from front to back” in preparation for the president’s arrival.
