Former President Donald Trump tapped Senator J.D. Vance (R-OH) as his running mate on Monday in spite of the unsparing attacks Vance has lobbed at Trump over the years.
Since throwing his hat in the political arena back in 2021, Vance has been an outspoken supporter of the former President, even securing his endorsement in the 2022 GOP Ohio Senate primary.
More recently, Vance blamed President Joe Biden’s presidential camp for the attempt on Trump’s life on Saturday.
‘Today is not just some isolated incident. The central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs. That rhetoric led directly to President Trump’s attempted assassination,” wrote Vance on X, formerly Twitter, shortly after a bullet grazed Trump’s ear.
But his own rhetoric about Trump was once similar to that which he decries now.
In a conversation with a friend back in 2016, Vance said, “I go back and forth between thinking Trump is a cynical asshole like Nixon who wouldn’t be that bad (and might even prove useful) or that he’s America’s Hitler. How’s that for discouraging?”
Other words he used to describe Trump included “reprehensible,” idiot,” and “noxious.”
Vance even repeatedly invoked religion to justify his opposition to Trump, submitting that “God wants better of us.”
“Fellow Christians, everyone is watching us when we apologize for this man. Lord help us,” he wrote in another instance.
Vance also liked tweets accusing Trump of “serial sexual assault,” as well as of being a “monster” and “one of USA’s most hated, villainous, douchey celebs.”
When Trump was accused of sexual assault by Jessica Leeds in 2016, Vance indicated on MSNBC that he believed her.
“This is sort of he said/she said, right? And at the end of the day, do you believe Donald Trump who always tells the truth? Just kidding, or do you believe that woman on the tape?” offered Vance.
Trump announced that Vance would be his running mate on Truth Social Monday afternoon, writing, “After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio.”
