Former State Dept. Official Credits ‘Herd Immunity’ for Allowing Viral Pool Party in Wuhan: Infections ‘Down Practically to Zero’

A former State Department official said Tuesday that “herd immunity” has been key to stopping the spread of the coronavirus in China to such a degree the country was able to allow a weekend pool party in Wuhan.

“It probably implies they have herd immunity in Wuhan, which, I think, is how this was arrested,” former State Department senior adviser Christian Whiton said in an interview with Fox Business host Charles Payne. “It wasn’t necessarily Communist Party oppression that solved it in the end. It was that so many people got this that you got herd immunity.”

Images from the Chinese city of Wuhan this week showed thousands of people attending a pool party at the city’s Maya Beach Water Park. None were wearing masks or engaged in social distancing.

“You have also these politically motivated scientists here in the United States saying well, you may never get the herd immunity for coronavirus or maybe that it’s a very high number,” Whiton said. “They also said that once you get it, well, maybe you don’t get immunity, maybe you can get again. We’ve seen reports in recent days, though, that herd immunity is achieved fairly early and that you probably do get immunity if you have this. Proof in the pudding of course, is Sweden, much derided for basically saying we’re going to let this sort of spread and get herd immunity. They seem to have gotten that.”

“Their numbers are down practically to zero, although They’re not throwing any pool parties,” Payne noted.
