House Democrat Accuses Robert Hur of Trying to Get a Professional Favor from Trump — With a Report That Criticized Trump

Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA) accused former Special Counsel Robert Hur of attempting to secure professional favors from Donald Trump by writing a report that recommended against charging Joe Biden as well as compared Trump unfavorably to him during Tuesday’s House Judiciary Committee hearing.

“Despite clearing President Biden from being prosecuted, you used your report to trash and smear President Biden because he said in response to questions over a five hour interview that he didn’t recall how he got the documents. And you knew that that would play into the Republicans’ narrative that the president is unfit for office because he’s senile and the American people,” asserted Johnson. “And you knew that that’s what was going to happen, didn’t you?”

Hur, who documented that Biden was unaware of the year that his son Beau died or if he was vice president in 2009 (his first year in that office) and 2013 (the first year of his second term), replied that he rejected “the suggestion” and insisted that “partisan politics played no part whatsoever in my work.”

Johnson then quizzed Hur about whether he was a member of the Federalist Society (he is not) and whether he was a registered Republican (he is) before making an even more serious accusation.

“You’re doing everything you can do to get President Trump reelected so that you can get appointed as a federal judge or perhaps to another position in the Department of Justice, isn’t that correct?” he inquired.

“Congressman, I have no such aspirations, I can assure you,” shot back Hur. “And I can tell you that partisan politics had no place whatsoever in my work. It had no place in the investigative steps that I took. It had no place in the decision that I made and it had no place in a single word of my report.”

Notably, Hur’s report explicitly distinguished between Trump and Biden’s improper retention of classified documents, observing that “after being given multiple chances to return classified documents and avoid prosecution, Mr. Trump allegedly did the opposite” and  “not only refused to return the documents for many months” but “also obstructed justice by enlisting others to destroy evidence and then to lie about it.”

“In contrast, Mr. Biden turned in classified documents to the National Archives and the Department of Justice, consented to the search of multiple locations including his homes, sat for a voluntary interview. and in other ways cooperated with the investigation,” observed Hur.
