Reporter Asks Biden if ‘Alexei Navalny’s Blood Is On the Hands of House Republicans’
President Joe Biden spoke to reporters on Monday as he returned to the White House from Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, and he was asked by CNN’s MJ Lee if House Republicans held any responsibility for the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny by blocking a bill that would give aid to Ukraine.
Biden had just gotten off of Marine One, which made the audio a little hard to hear, but Lee’s question was:
Would you go as far as to say that Alexei Navalny’s blood is on the hands of House Republicans right now?
Referring to House Republicans delay in passing Ukraine aid, Biden replied:
They’re making a big mistake not responding. Look, the way they’re walking away from the threat of Russia, the way they’re walking away from NATO, the way they’re walking away from meeting their obligations, it’s just shocking. … I’ve never seen anything like this.
Biden also told a different reporter that in response to Navalny’s death, the White House was “considering additional sanctions” against Russia.
The Senate passed a bipartisan bill that included aid to Ukraine early last week, but House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) said he would not bring the bill to the House floor for a vote. Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX) further said on Friday that despite the death of Navalny, as well as the possibility that Russia’s nuclear capabilities may extend to space, “I do think [Johnson] wants to get through the appropriations process first — that takes us to March 8 — and then deal with the supplemental.”
