Reporter Asks Jean-Pierre If Biden Will Stop Trump From Getting Intel Briefings As Nominee

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre gave a tantalizing answer when asked about the prospect of President Joe Biden moving to block former President Donald Trump from receiving intel briefings once he’s the GOP nominee.

Weeks after the January 6 attack on the Capitol in 2021, President Biden barred Trump from receiving the intel briefings normally offered to ex-presidents.

“I just think that there is no need for him to have the intelligence briefings. What value is giving him an intelligence briefing? What impact does he have at all, other than the fact he might slip and say something?” Biden said at the time.

At Wednesday’s  White House press briefing, Associated Press White House correspondent Seung Min Kim brought up those remarks, and Jean-Pierre said Biden’s words “stand today.”

And when asked if Biden would block Trump from getting intel briefings once he’s officially the nominee — which would normally occur in September — KJP left the door open by repeating that Biden’s “comments certainly do stand today”:

SEUNG MIN KIM: And one domestic matter. Back in February of 2021, President Biden said Donald Trump should not be given the traditional intelligence briefings that were given to former presidents because, quote, “What value is giving him an intelligence briefing? What impact does he have at all, other than the fact that he might slip and say something?”

Does the President still feel that way now — now that Donald Trump is on the way to becoming the party’s — the Republican Party’s nominee and would be entitled to the briefings that a president — a party candidate would get?

MS. JEAN-PIERRE: I think the President’s words stand today as he stated them however long ago. I don’t think his mind has changed on that. I just don’t have anything to add.

SEUNG MIN KIM: Would he do anything to block him from getting these briefings later this year?

MS. JEAN-PIERRE: I don’t have anything to add. But the President was very clear about how he felt about that, and I would say those — those comments certainly do stand today.

Watch above via pool.
