Susan Sarandon Dumped By Talent Agency UTA Over Israel ‘War Crime’ Comments
Actor Susan Sarandon has been dropped by talent agency UTA over remarks she made at a pro-Palestinian rally in New York’s Union Square, according to an agency spokesperson.
The news came less than a week after she said, “There are a lot of people afraid of being Jewish at this time, and are getting a taste of what it feels like to be a Muslim in this country,” according to reporting by Deadline.
Both pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian rallies have been held throughout the United States, including on college campuses, since Hamas killed 1,200 civilians in Israel on Oct. 7.
A video posted to a fan account on X (formerly Twitter) captured more of Sarandon’s comments:
I stand here in my cruelly given white privilege to say you don’t have to be Palestinian to stand with the Palestinian people. You do not have to be Palestinian to understand that the slaughter of almost 5,000 children is unacceptable and a war crime. You do not have to be Palestinian to understand that war crimes are being delivered every single day, according to the UN and other humanitarian groups. This is a time for education, because as a previous speaker mentioned, so many people do not understand the context in which this Oct. 7 assaults happened. They don’t understand the history of what has been happening to the Palestinian people for 75 years.
So, this is an opportunity to educate people if they can have an open mind. If you can get beyond the tribal instincts that have separated us now for so long. It’s time to have an open heart. It’s time to be strong. And it’s time that Palestine be free. There is no freedom until everyone is free.
On Monday, Sarandon reposted a Palestine Online tweet about Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters, who has been accused of his own anti-Semitic views.
The original post read, “Despite attempts by the Israeli lobby to cancel the event, Roger Waters of Pink Floyd took the stage in Uruguay, donning a Kufiyyah and advocating for an end to the Israeli genocide in Gaza.”
The Oscar winner for the 1996 film Dead Man Walking is outspoken in her views on women’s issues and human rights abuses. She broke with Democrats in 2016 when she backed Green Party candidate Jill Stein over Hillary Clinton because the former senator from New York had voted for the war in Iraq.
UTA is one of the largest talent agencies in the world, boasting approximately 300 agents representing actors, directors, producers, musicians, and writers.
Sarandon hasn’t publicly commented on UTA’s announcement.
