WATCH: Trump Twists The Knife On Latest Failed Republican Speaker Bid Seconds After It Ends
Former President Donald Trump twisted the knife on Rep. Tom Emmer’s (R-MN) bid to become speaker of the House just seconds after it ended, telling reporters, “That was quick!”
Trump was in court Tuesday for his trial in the fraud case brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James and presided over by Judge Arthur Engoron. Also in court was Trump’s former fixer-turned-star witness Michael Cohen.
As he did last week, Trump took the occasional opportunity to rant to reporters about the case — and whatever else reporters could get him to talk about.
At one point, Trump emerged from the courtroom just after Emmer dropped out of the speaker’s race and couldn’t resist taking credit for the defeat:
REPORTER 1: Do you think you had an impact there? And who would you like to see as speaker?
DONALD TRUMP: I absolutely must have had an impact because as soon as I did the un-endorsement and it was never an endorsement, I was never treated particularly well by them, as you probably heard. And it was a fact that most people are MAGA in the Republican Party want to see our country great again. So I disagreed with them on a lot of things over the years, and I assume I had a big impact. I wrote a note. I wrote I guess you’d call an endorsement of anybody else.
And I haven’t made a determination on the else. But we have some very good people. We have some real great people, and we’re not too good for the list right now. But we do have some great people.
REPORTER 1: Well, do you support Byron Donalds?
DONALD TRUMP: I like Byron very much. I like. So pretty much I was not happy with the one that seemed to be gaining speed, I disagreed with him very much on globalism and on many other things. And that’s the way it turned out. I’m for America first. America first is very important to me. I don’t think he was for America first. And so it looks like he dropped out. Did he just dropped out?
REPORTERS: He just dropped out.
Well that was quick. That was very quick. But we are some great people and one of them will be chosen. And what they’ve chosen, I think we’re going to speak to we have four or five that want it.
And on Wednesday morning, Trump danced on Emmer’s grave some more with a post on Truth Social congratulating Republicans for replacing him with Rep. Mike Johnson:
Congratulations to Congressional Republicans! Yesterday was a big and very important day. It gave us a quick and easy way forward with 5 candidates who are beyond reproach, and represent the absolute best there is in the Republican Party. Even the Fake News Media is impressed with what took place yesterday and, more importantly, with the Candidates themselves. Congratulations to Reps. Byron Donalds (Florida), Charles J. “Chuck” Fleischmann (Tennessee), Mark Green (Tennessee), & Roger Williams (Texas), & the ultimate winner of yesterday’s vote, by a significant margin, Mike Johnson (Louisiana). I am not going to make an Endorsement in this race, because I COULD NEVER GO AGAINST ANY OF THESE FINE AND VERY TALENTED MEN, all of whom have supported me, in both mind and spirit, from the very beginning of our GREAT 2016 Victory. In 2024, we will have an even bigger, & more important, WIN! My strong SUGGESTION is to go with the leading candidate, Mike Johnson, & GET IT DONE, FAST! LOVE, DJT
