As His Mother Speaks at Press Conference, Alton Sterling’s Son Breaks Down
The family of Alton Sterling appeared at a press conference this morning in Baton Rouge. Among other things, local NAACP leaders and others called for the police chief to step down and called for the cops involved in the shooting of Sterling, which was caught on camera by a bystander, to be charged.
Sterling’s police record will be reviewed extensively by the public. Debates will rage over whether the officers should be charged at all. Throughout all of those weedy conversations, it will be worth remembering that there are elements of the case that have nothing to do with the law. There are human elements that cannot be debated.
Here is his young son, age 15, breaking down in sobs as his mother addresses the media:

Watch above as his son begins to cry and is held by surrounding community members. Sterling was the father of five. By his family’s account, he sold CDs in the space where he was eventually killed so that he could help provide for his children.
