‘Call It What It Is!’: Sunny Hostin Rails Against Media Calling Nazism the ‘Alt-Right’

imageedit_220_8177345886Today on The View, the ladies addressed the white nationalist conference that took place in D.C. this weekend. Just like the panelists, the Holocaust Museum has condemned the National Policy Institute meet-up, as has the restaurant that hosted some of the attendees after the conference.

After showing a video of attendees raising their hands in Nazi salutes and yelling “Hail [DonaldTrump,” the women got to work completely tearing the event and its participants apart. Joy Behar furiously said that her relatives didn’t fight in World War II so that these “creeps” could broadcast their hateful views. Whoopi Goldberg countered that the benefit of broadcasting them is that viewers get to see that this is real and it is happening.

It was Sunny Hostin who demanded some accountability from the media reporting on the conference and its attendees’ behavior in general, though. She, like others, was especially angry that Trump didn’t denounce the conference more forcefully than he did. She said this:

We’re talking about the Donald Trump who said, “President [BarackObama, you must call it ‘Islamic Terrorism.’ You must say the words.” Well, President-elect Trump, you must say that the alt-right is a white supremacist group! And you denounce it! You don’t stand by it! Why won’t he do that? … We’re calling it the “alt-right.” The person we just saw in that video [Richard Spencer] is the person who coined that phrase. Don’t call it the alt-right; call it what it is. It’s white supremacy and I think we are sort of normalizing this movement by calling it the alt-right.

They continued to debate the merits of being more direct when talking about white supremacy and Goldberg ended by reminding viewers at home that America was never a land for white people only and, in fact, was stolen from the Native Americans.
