Chris Matthews: Trump is Talking His Way Into a ‘Perjury Problem’

Chris Matthews gave President Donald Trump credit for speaking with Lester Holt on the NBC Nightly News. But he was a bit perplexed as to the President’s motives for doing the interview in the first place.

On Hardball Thursday, Matthews credited Holt with pressing Trump for specific details on the three times that the President said he was told by fired FBI Director James Comey that he was not under investigation. Matthews believes Trump is only talking his way into trouble by offering up details which can be proved or disproved.

“I have never seen a President submit himself to this,” Matthews said. “First of all, Lester is a pro, and he knows how to ask the questions. But it’s like he’s talking him into a perjury problem. Because he made him directly make these claims.”

Matthews added, “Why’s he giving us all this information? Because it can all be checked.”

The Hardball host added that he believes Trump tipped his hand a bit in the Holt interview, and showed who scares him the most.

I think the President proved again today with Lester Holt he fears two kinds of people: Straight reporters for the front page. Can’t stand them. Factual reporters…He’s afraid of public servants who do their job and are not political like Sally Yates and [Comey]…’cause they possess the truth.
