CNN’s Gloria Borger on Trump’s Press Conference Demeanor: It’s Like He’s ‘In a Straitjacket’

Following Monday’s joint news conference at the White House between President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minster Justin Trudeau, CNN’s chief political analyst Gloria Borger offered her perspective — that one of the most televised personalities in the last three decades in American life does not seem at ease in these settings.

“The President seems completely not comfortable in these situations,” Borger said. “Whether it’s because he doesn’t want to answer the questions — he’s just not comfortable in these situations.

“It’s like someone put him in a straitjacket. And he can’t figure out a way out of it.”

CNN political director David Chalian agreed with Borger’s assessment, citing what he called a “perfunctory” read of a prepared statement.

“That does not look like someone who’s enjoying himself,” Chalian said. He added, “This just seemed almost perfunctory for him. He just does not seem to be relishing the job.”
