Deposed Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak Set to Be Released

Hosni Mubarak, the deposed Egyptian president, may be released from prison in the next week, his lawyer said Monday.

Mubarak, who was ousted in 2011 after three decades of dictatorial rule over Egypt, had been tried for his role in allowing the murder of 900 Egyptian citizens during the protests that resulted in his removal from power; his original life sentence was overturned by an Egyptian court. More than a year after the conclusion of his trial, only corruption charges remain, which Mubarak’s lawyer said the prosecution is about to clear.

“All we have left is a simple administrative procedure that should take no more than 48 hours,” his lawyer, Fareed el-Deeb, said. “He should be freed by the end of the week.”

Mubarak is one of two Egyptian presidents currently being detained; Mohamed Morsi, who was deposed by the military last month, is incarcerated at an undisclosed location. Mubarak will be released into a country in similar turmoil as that which greeted the end of his reign, with more than 1,000 killed last week in violent clashes between the Egyptian military and Muslim Brotherhood supporters.
