Don Lemon: ‘Isn’t it Political Correctness to Make Someone Attend’ Inauguration if They Don’t Want To?

During a panel discussion tonight on CNN surrounding the uproar at a historically black college that accepted an invitation for its marching band to perform at Donald Trump’s inauguration, host Don Lemon wondered what forcing students to attend would say.

With dual petitions going around at Talladega College — one in favor of going and one against attending — Lemon gathered Daily Caller writer Matt Lewis and former Bernie Sanders campaign staffer Symone Sanders to discuss the matter.

As Lewis was in favor of the students attending, stating that it was more about witnessing the transfer of power than about endorsing the new president, Lemon brought up the bigger issue of celebrities rejecting the Trump team’s invites. He then wanted to know if compelling anyone to attend is “political correctness.”

“It’s interesting because on this part they’re saying it is political correctness that they don’t want to attend,” Lemon noted. “But isn’t it political correctness to make someone attend if they don’t want to attend an inauguration?”

He continued, “It seems to me, Matt, that it’s backwards here. If these stars don’t want to attend, they’re not being politically correct. It would be politically correct to do it and say I’m doing it because it’s for the country.”

Lemon was obviously making a reference to one of Trump’s major campaign themes, where he decried political correctness.
