Education Dept. Apologizes After Getting Mocked on Twitter for Misspelling W.E.B. Du Bois’ Name
The Department of Education apologized this afternoon after receiving quite a lot of Twitter mockery for misspelling the name of one of the founders of the NAACP.
This is the initial tweet they sent out about W.E.B. Du Bois (which is still up, as of this posting):

And cue the Twitter mockery over the irony of this particular department getting its spelling wrong:
"In the Days of Loose & Careless Logic, We Must Teach Thinkers to THINK." – William Edward Burghardt DU Bois ?? https://t.co/3m03Vnt5C1

.@usedgov *W.E.B. Du Bois
All good. Not like this is the official Twitter for the US Department of Education. ?

@usedgov Looks like @BetsyDeVos is in charge now! pic.twitter.com/paajsZsUSL

@usedgov OMG, it's DuBois. Who is in charge over there?…oh, wait, I get it.

.@usedgov: W.E.B. Du Bois. Gee, if you quote an @NAACP founding member about education on #FoundersDay during #BHM, spell his name right! ✊? https://t.co/jNI0CHsprj

Um. You spelled his name wrong. It's DuBois. Happy Black History Month, everybody! https://t.co/q1TLQpH386

And teaching spelling wouldn't hurt. #WEBDuBois https://t.co/l7dDbUky0r

Is it funny sad or sad funny that our Dept. of Education misspelled the name of the great W. E. B. Du Bois? https://t.co/egi6Nn15gp

Heaven help us! The Dept. of Education misspelled DuBois… #bydhttmwfi https://t.co/PT6I1Em8aN

The department ended up tweeting out a corrected version and apologizing for the error:
Post updated – our deepest apologies for the earlier typo.
— US Dept of Education (@usedgov) February 12, 2017
Unfortunately, the first version of that tweet also contained a typo:
