Evan McMullin: Anyone Supporting Trump Is ‘Not Too Committed to the Constitution’
Conservative independent presidential candidate Evan McMullin is dismayed by the number of Republicans on board the Donald Trump train.
In an interview with The Guardian, McMullin makes it clear that while he may be at odds with some conservative dogma––he believes climate change is a manmade problem and that “the Republican party is stuck in the past” when it comes to racial and environmental matters––he is “more aligned” with them on most policy than Trump is.
He does has some pretty harsh critiques of all the Repulbicans who have gotten behind their party’s nominee:
“Anyone who supports Donald Trump is someone who I think is not too committed to the constitution,” he said. “I believe Donald Trump poses a true threat to our constitution and those who support him are sustaining that threat.”
McMullin says he’s had plenty of conversations with Republican legislators who privately told him that Trump is doing and saying things that are “dangerous” to America, but they won’t publicly condemn him because they’re afraid of the political backlash.
He also threw out this warning for the GOP and what it needs to to beyond this year:
If the GOP sticks with Trump, he worries, “as his bigotry becomes more front and center, even as the alt-right becomes more vocal and it’s more and more clear that they contribute heavily to the empowerment of his campaign”, the party will sign its own death warrant.
