Ex-New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison

Ray Nagin, the former New Orleans mayor whose term most infamously included the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, has been sentenced to ten years in prison after being found guilty in February on a number of charges, including fraud and bribery. Nagin was found guilty of accepting money, free granite (his family runs a granite company), and free vacations as bribes from local businessmen.

During the trial, prosecutors not only went after Nagin on the corruption charges, they also said Nagin spent the intervening years covering up what he’d done and his trial testimony showed an “astounding unwillingness to accept any responsibility for his actions.”

Nagin has been ordered to begin his prison term on September 8th.
